I do frequent water changes in my tanks due to the large number of fish I keep in the tanks. I often will be forced to do a water change when a simple vacuum of the gravel would suffice. This tool has the option of doing a complete water change while cleaning the gravel or, by adding the included filter to the unit, you can just filter out the debris on the surface of the gravel while adding back the same water into the tank eliminating having to carry buckets of water. I now can do a simple cleaning of the gravel once every 1-2 weeks and do a water change once a month. This tool takes a large burden off the chore of aquarium cleaning/water changing off your chore list.

I have a 20-gallon long aquarium tank which the height of the tank is about 12in. I used black sand as subrate and I always had issues cleaning the sand as the siphon is often too strong and will remove wastes and sand. I got the gravel cleaner because it indicated that it could clean sand. In the recycle mode, itt did a great job cleaning up the sand without removing them or cleaning the sand which I was really surprised and happy about. Unfortunately, the unit created a big water-splashing mess as well. To recycle the water, it needed to have the sponge filter attached. The water will come out directly from the sponge filter instead of the hose exit knob. What the item description doesn’t show you is that the cleaning head to the filter sponge is about 15 inches. So in my 20-gal long tank, the water comes out uncontrollably from 3 in above my tank which created a ton of wet mess. The problem is that the water needs to have a controlled exit. So I connected with the siphon configuration. I went to the hardware store to get a 1/2″ female thread adapter (~$1.50). I shortened/cut the hose and attached to the siphon knob/handle and the 1/2″ adapter which is attached to the filter. Now I can control how the water exits. It also allows me to use a stronger pull and I can direct the strong flow exit to stir up the water in a way in which the flow with waste particles will be sucked up. Overall it’s a good unit, I wished it came with the adapter.
